Female representation in the European Commission is the highest it has ever been. In addition to the new European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the current structure of the Commission comprises 11 female members.
Most commissioners have served as ministers in their national governments in the past, while 9 of Ursula von der Leyen’s team have been MEPs, the EP stated.
The youngest new commissioner is 29-year-old Lithuanian Virginijus Sinkevičius, while the oldest is former European Parliament president Josep Borrell at 72.
For the first time ever, the European Commission President is also a woman. Ursula von der Leyen got Parliament’s approval for the European Commission post in July, 2019.
